Marvel Comics
Gene Colan (1926-2011)
India ink on Bristol board.
Daredevil escapes from a prison hospital.
Gene Colan remains one of the artists most closely associated with Daredevil. Beginning in 1966, he gave the character a uniquely recognizable silhouette and atmosphere, characterized by thick shadows, brush-stroke shading, and dynamic characters that break out of the panel borders.
Nicknamed "Gentleman Gene," Colan had a sense of panel layout reminiscent of cinema. This escape scene is a fine example of that.
A page from the late 1960s, by the artist who left an indelible mark on the character for an entire generation of readers.
Editorial annotations, including "CONTINUED AFTER NEXT PAGE."
