Record of Lodoss War | The Chronicles of the Lodoss War
Vertical production panel in Indian ink and acrylic, with a matching background depicting Karla, the Grey Witch, in the body of the priestess Leylia, gazing at her orb. She is the series’ main antagonist, obsessed with maintaining a perfect balance of power on the island of Lodoss; indeed, if the Camp of Light becomes too powerful and is on the verge of unifying the island, she intervenes to weaken them by aiding the Camp of Darkness; however, when the latter gains the upper hand, she allies herself with the Camp of Light. This obsession stems from a deep-seated trauma. Karla is the last survivor of Kastuul, an ancient and immensely powerful magical kingdom that collapsed due to its own excesses. Convinced that the absolute concentration of power always leads to annihilation, she has vowed to keep Lodoss in a state of perpetual yet controlled war to prevent a similar catastrophe. To achieve her ends, Karla regards the kings, heroes and peoples of Lodoss as mere pawns on a chessboard. She is prepared to unleash terrible wars and sacrifice thousands of innocent lives without the slightest remorse, believing this to be a necessary price to ‘save’ the island in the long term.
