Nadia and the Secret of the Blue Water
Production celluloid painted in Indian ink and acrylic, with a matching printed background featuring Jean Roque Lartigue – sometimes also known as Jean Roque Raltique – the hero of the series, a young engineering prodigy from Le Havre, and Electra, Captain Nemo’s second-in-command, in the cockpit of the Neo-Nautilus. *Nadia and the Secret of the Blue Water* is a series that passed through the hands of two very great Japanese directors; initially, the project and concept for the series were devised by none other than Hayao Miyazaki in the late 1970s for Toho Studios, who drew inspiration from Jules Verne’s novel *Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea*. Although the project was shelved, elements of the series can be found in his 1986 film *Laputa: Castle in the Sky*. It was in 1989 that Toho revived the project and collaborated with Gainax and NHK to produce the 39-episode series, with Hideaki Anno directing Miyazaki’s long-lost project.
