On the occasion of a jewellery auction on Thursday 9 July 2020, PIASA auction house is pleased to offer for sale a Vacheron Constantin tuxedo watch made in the late 1920s.
The world's oldest watch manufacturer, Vacheron Constantin was founded in 1755 in Geneva by Jean-Marc Vacheron, a close friend of the philosophers Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire. In 1770, the Vacheron company invented the world's first watchmaking complication and, just nine years later, created the first guilloché dials.
Jean-Marc Vacheron's son, Abraham Vacheron, took over the family business in 1785. Despite the difficulties it faced, the company managed to survive the earthquake of the French Revolution and its powerful aftershocks. In 1810, Jacques-Barthélemy Vacheron, the founder's grandson, took over the management of the company. He was the first to launch exports, notably to neighbouring France and Italy. The latter undertook a trip abroad in order to sell his pieces there.
A key date in the company's history, in 1819, François Constantin joined forces with Vacheron. The latter travelled several times to North America, then one of the world's leading markets. The quality of Vacheron Constantin timepieces has always gone hand in hand with a desire to be modern through the early use of cutting-edge technology.

Among the timepieces offered for sale on Thursday 9 July 2020, this 18k white gold watch is estimated at between 6,000 and 8,000 euros. Its round dial with a cream background, Arabic numerals and hands set with rose-cut diamonds give this exceptional timepiece all its character.
It should be noted here that the bezel, like the bélière, is adorned with antique cut diamonds.
Measurement, precision and the use of precious materials are combined with great virtuosity.
