Auctions in Brussels | Results: €2.6 million

With total auction sales of €2,600,000, PIASA strengthens its position within the Belgian market. This result illustrates the strong enthusiasm of collectors for the specialties represented.

Among the highlights of the first sale, we can mention Le Printemps (1933) by Jean Brusselmans, which sold for €105,168—nearly twice its estimate (lot 10). Toits d’Ostende (1877) by James Ensor soared to €31,550 (lot 08). Untitled (1959) by Jean Rets saw its estimate quadrupled (lot 40). Venice(circa 1982) by Marthe Wery was sold for €27,607 (lot 54).

Other nationalities were also represented during the sale. The model Esfera Theospacio (1989/2008) by Jesús Rafael Soto was sold for €46,011 (lot 96).

DETAILS OF LOT 08

The second sale, dedicated to iconic figures of design, was marked by the auction of a so-called “Gérard Philipe” desk by Jules Wabbes for €47,326,more than double its estimate (lot 161). A malachite coffee table by Ado Chale saw its estimate tripled (lot 181), while a lemon-yellow lacquered wood sideboard by
Emiel Veranneman sold for €28,921 (lot 193).

We also note the continued strong interest in internationally renowned designers. A 12-light suspension lamp, model Pavone, by Italian designer Gio Ponti was awarded for €76,247 (lot 245). Finally, lot 230—a floor lamp model no. 9602 known as Chinese Hat by Paavo Tynell—was sold for €28,921.

All results include buyer’s premium.
