Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec: Organic Design

9 February 2026

Gaelle Refloch

In 1990, brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec joined forces, forming one of the most influential duos in contemporary design.

Originally from Quimper, they draw inspiration from their childhood, from nature, and from the evolution of society to create everyday objects as well as architectural and urban projects. This sensitivity to living forms is evident in the Banquise coffee table (Galerie kreo), in the “Chaînes” collection (Galerie kreo), which evokes suspended vines, and in their Algues (Vitra).

Similarly, in the Losange collection, vases already furnished with vegetal stems are produced in two colors—blue and green—and in four different heights. Their research into form, glaze, and ceramic texture extends the experiments they conducted for the exhibition Seventeen Screens, presented at the FRAC Bretagne in Rennes. One of the prototypes resulting from this research will be offered in the upcoming Contemporary Design sale on Wednesday, February 18, 2026: Vase, model “Losange 38 green” (Lot 19, estimate €5,000–7,000).

Here, the connection to nature is revealed through the choice of colors. The light, airy blue of the sky responds to a deeper, more vegetal green, evoking a dense, mineral luxuriance. The cubic form in no way diminishes this organic impression; on the contrary, the undulating facets of the vase invite the eye to wander through the nuances of the ceramic, like a mirage. The stem emerging from it breaks the rigor of the cube and reintroduces a living gesture.

With the Bouroullec brothers, nature becomes geometric, modern, and rational—yet always profoundly sensitive.
