Ron Arad: making the forms dance

23 March 2020

Since the early 1980s, the work of Israeli architect and designer Ron Arad has been celebrated around the world.

The designer initially trained with the French-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi (born in 1944). Born in Tel Aviv in 1951 and trained at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and then at the Architectural Association School in London, Ron Arad moved to London in 1973, where he has since produced a diverse range of creations in sinusoidal, elliptical and ovoid forms, from one-off pieces to limited editions and industrial production. This is the art, or rather the protean talent of this creator who has never been able to choose between design, art and architecture, to better embrace everything.

In this post-punk London of the 1980s, there are a few young people trying out new ways of producing objects, like Tom Dixon who launched the Creative Salvage movement around recycled metal, in a New Bronze Age style. "They used to recycle. I was more into found objects, the ready-made, inspired by Marcel Duchamp. I was transforming pre-existing elements, such as Concrete Stereo (1983): a plate embedded in concrete. "Ron Arad recalls, or the 1981 Rover Chair, a perfect symbol of his "borrowed" style.

A bulimic and free creator, free and unconstrained, passionate about materials, Ron Arad initially experimented with metal, then he tested blown aluminium in 1998, selective laser sintering in 1999, carbon fibre in 2002, Corian in 2004 and silicone ten years later. In 2019, it is finally solid pewter that amuses him. But if there is one form associated with Ron Arad, it is the ribbon. In design as in architecture, the artist declines it, in all materials, in various forms with curved and sinuous lines, enriching his creation with the freedom and strength of calligraphy.

Alongside his unique and industrial design creations, Ron Arad has never ceased to be interested in architecture, as his numerous achievements in this field show. Between private residences, hotel and restaurant design, he is above all the one who imagined the Bauhaus Museum in Tel Aviv, who participated with Bruno Asa in the creation of the Holon Design Museum in Israel without forgetting more recently the project of the "UK Holocaust Memorial" in London which will be completed in 2022.
