The Jewels of René Boivin

1 July 2020

As part of the sale dedicated to jewelry on Thursday, July 9, 2020, PIASA auction house offers for sale a bracelet made by the French house René Boivin founded in 1893.

It is in the company of his elder brother Victor that René Boivin (1864-1917) became familiar with the techniques of goldsmithing while training in drawing. He was only 17 years old at the time. In the space of a few years, he bought several workshops, including the Soufflot workshop, and set up his machines and workforce at 38 rue de Turbigo.

His numerous collaborations with companies such as Meller or Boucheron considerably increase his clientele, so much so that he has to move to new premises on rue des Pyramides. After his untimely death at the age of 53 and that of his only son, his widow saved the company by perpetuating the style of his jewellery. Little by little, the aesthetics of Mrs. René Boivin's jewellery allowed the company to emancipate itself from the René Boivin's invoice.

Indifferent to the fashions of the period marked by Art Nouveau, she favoured bold and voluminous pieces set with large precious stones but also with coloured hard stones. Her pieces give great importance to textures and sculptural forms.

Like a symbol of modernity on the march, some of her rings divert the male signet ring to offer a feminine version. Atypical and avant-garde, Boivin's creations reflect a real influence from the East and Asia and fascinate personalities such as Edgar Degas, Sigmund Freud and Pierre Bergé.
