Africa, Pierre Loos Collection

7 September 2018

Fetishes, ceremonial masks, funeral stelae and votive statuettes are Pierre Loos' companions. Lover of objects, shapes and materials, Pierre Loos is a passionate traveller and a tireless collector.

From his first steps, he succumbed to Africa. He loves his smiles, materials and tones, which he brings together through all kinds of works and objects: finely carved stools, beds carved from a single tree trunk, ladders, ritual weapons, tomb markers, fabrics and basketry which, accumulated and overlaid, form his own inventory in the Prévert. But there is nothing surreal about this universe.

Estimation : 800 - 1 200 €

Aware that he was living the last moments of a "disappearing Africa", Pierre Loos began, in the 1960s, to collect Africa's ghosts. His life was then divided between Congo and Belgium.

This incredible collection, patiently built up, is remarkable, both from an aesthetic and ethnographic point of view. Each element reflects an artistic refinement, each form reflects a culture. The experience of objects is essential. Their patina tells a story: the story of the people who created them. These are the stories that Pierre decided to share.
