12 June 2020

As part of the sale devoted to Modern and Contemporary African Art on Wednesday,June,24, 2020, PIASA in partnership with Aspire Auction, is offering collectors a painting by the Kenyan artist Peter Ngugi.

Alongside the clothing business he created in the late 1990s, Peter Ngugi turned to art as a self-taught artist. While visiting the galleries and rooms of the National Museum in Nairobi, he became familiar with the realistic painting that characterized his early works.

However, the artist soon opted for a more contemporary style. His work is then the subject of a first exhibition "Art Festival" in 1999, when he devotes himself exclusively to the practice of his art.

Estimation : 8 000 / 12 000 euros

The work "Untitled" presented by PIASA on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 was created by Peter Ngugi in 2018. Against a densely populated background of ornamental motifs, three male figures are depicted from headland to headland. Their clothing (jeans and football jerseys) offer a striking contrast to the flowers, which are reminiscent of a more traditional iconography. Estimated at between 8,000 and 12,000 euros, this large format evokes, through the prism of metaphor, the contemporary reality of a country, Kenya. The bodies of these subjects are treated without any details appearing as if they were mere silhouettes. In recent years, Peter Ngugi's paintings have been highly specified by the contemporary African art market. In 2019, "Small ponds" estimated between 6,000 and 8,000 euros was sold by PIASA for 26,000 euros. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
