Mimmo Paladino: leading figure of the Trans-avant-garde movement

2 December 2019

As part of its session devoted to jewellery and artists' jewellery on 3 December 2019, PIASA is presenting six works by the leading figure of the Trans-avant-garde movement Mimmo Paladino.

There are plastic encounters that the distance of the years transforms into a true aesthetic birth. There are many examples. They populate the biographies of past and present creators. For Mimmo Paladino, whose real name is Domenico Paladino, this start on his artistic career was the 1964 edition of the Venice Biennale, where he saw the work of the American artist Claes Oldenburg (born in 1929). He was only 16 years old at the time.

When he began drawing a few years later, the young man could in an iconographic repertoire very influenced by Greek-Latin mythology, Byzantine culture and the Quattrocento. First presented in 1976 in Brescia, his work was exhibited in New York at the Marian Goodman Gallery.

In 1980, it was this time as a guest that he participated in the Venice Biennale in the "Aperto 80" section alongside Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Nicola De Maria, the other Italian artists of the Trans-avant-garde movement.

During the 1980s, the artist became one of the major protagonists of art in Italy, advocating a return to the minimal or even primitive function of art. Painter, draughtsman, engraver, sculptor, he takes hold of craft methods and experiments with traditional techniques to create strange animals, or hybrid and distorted characters.
