On Thursday January 28th, 2021, PIASA will present more than 77 works of art by different sculptors, painters and visual artists from the current art scene at its first (very) Contemporary Art auction. On this occasion, a work by Michael Manning will be presented at the sale.
Michael Manning is part of a generation of artists who were highly regarded in the early 2000s for their unique way of exploring the relationship between digital and analogue in painting. Working both online and with objects, the Californian artist is interested in the Internet, technology and the necessities related to the object, in an era where photography, the diffusion of jpegs and countless other documents prevail. Manning began his practice by working exclusively in the digital sphere and by creating online paintings in hardware demonstration shops.
The artist creates his paintings on digital tablets or on image editing software such as Photoshop, then prints them on canvas and mimics the brushstrokes with hand-applied transparent acrylic or 3D printing. Using a familiar imagery of abstract gestures, his paintings question the interconnections between material and digital culture of the object.
