The jewellery in the 1950s-60s

3 May 2020

The post-war years are marked by a clear willingness to turn the page, to erase painful memories and to look forward to the future with confidence and optimism. Women want to escape, they are looking for that festive and carefree side to their outfits that they have been missing since the global conflict invaded their lives.

It is time for celebration, luxury and joie de vivre. Jewellery is becoming multicoloured, a little prone to ostentation, in a society where the taste for appearance and adornment is freely displayed and is taboo for no one. We are witnessing the resumption of an intense social life with famous balls given by a Carlos de Beistegui, an Arturo Lopez, a baron of Rédé where the outfits are accompanied by finery that is grandiose in volume and colour. On the French side, it is the period of the thirty glorious years; the French Riviera becomes a mecca for the international Jet-Set and glamour. The attraction and fascination between Paris and New York intensifies in an atmosphere of shared creative euphoria. These are the Kennedy years, the years of the American dream, of the Hollywood stars where Audrey Hepburn becomes the ambassador of Tiffany and the muse of Givenchy and Mona Bismarck dresses in Balenciaga.

After the hardships of war, the precious materials are available again. We like gold, preferably yellow because it is more dazzling, but also platinum, which we associate with diamonds, coloured stones, turquoise, coral and cultured pearls, which are making a strong comeback. During this period, enamoured of freedom, the jewels are transformable, the patterns are detached to be worn more easily at different hours of the day, like a Chanel tailor; in the morning, afternoon, cocktail or evening. Fashion is as much about large carat falls, thanks to spectacular world economic growth, as it is about costume jewellery associated with fashion, the world of entertainment, parties and balls. In America, women no longer hesitate to mix the real and the fake.
Eyes are now crossed over the Atlantic. From America comes the taste for dynamic shapes and figurative motifs. Taking the opposite tack from the previous period, the jewel refuses to be confined, it tends to escape from the restrictive frames of Art Deco and is not very sensitive to symmetry. The subjects become naturalistic, fauna and flora with friendly themes are in the spotlight. In allegorical form, birds on the branch, preferably exotic, with shimmering plumage or lyrical flights, butterflies, bouquets of flowers, real animals or animals borrowed from the fantastic bestiary, aerial dancers, will be the symbols of the newfound freedom.
