On the occasion of its next session of Contemporary African Art, on Wednesday 7 October at 6 pm, PIASA highlights the work of several generations of artists, including Kirubel Melke (born in 1983) and his work in embroidered fabric on unmounted canvas.

Born in 1983, Kirubel Melke is a visual artist who lives and works in Ethiopia. He holds a degree in Marketing from Addis Ababa National College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Addis Ababa University.

Inspired by his mother's work in a textile factory, Kirubel Melke's main interest is in fabric, creating elaborate paintings from fabric fragments. Since his third year at the School of Fine Arts, washed clothes hanging from a wire have been a recurring theme in his work.
