PIASA will continue to chart the history of ceramics on 12 April 2018, when nearly 80 unique works by Milan’s Guido De Zan will be offered during the sale of Italian Design. The pieces come from De Zan’s personal collection, and form the first part of the auction.
Guido De Zan studied sociology and worked with children in difficulty, before deciding to devote himelf to his passion: ceramics. He was self-taught and, free of the influence of leading schools or masters, saw ceramics more as a means of expression than a manufacturing process. Over and beyond questions of form, his works have a tonality that resonate with the eye. Milky whites dialogue with luminous greys. Professionals often say these pieces have ‘presence.’ Flaminio Gualdoni, in the introduction to his GUIDO DE ZAN SCULPTURES 1995-2008, talks of ‘sculpture not as an object, but as an apparition.’

De Zan uses the traditional, highly skilled Japanese pottery-making technique of Raku. His sinuous, geometric works range from sculptures to elegantly undulating vases, sometimes becoming anthropomorphic figures with well-defined features. Rigid forms and patterns give other De Zan works the appearance of urban structures. Since the 1990s his ceramics have incorporated a graphic approach à la Twombly. Despite adopting the sober approach of traditional ceramics, his works look amazingly modern. They form a highly individual contribution to contemporary ceramics.
