As part of its Editions auction on Tuesday, December 11, 2019, PIASA is delighted to be able to present to collectors two lithographs by one of the most emblematic figures of Italian contemporary art: Giuseppe Penone.
Just graduated in accounting, Giuseppe Penone joined the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin where he developed a keen interest in American minimalism and became interested in his leading figures such as Donald Judd and Robert Morris.
In 1968, he was 21 years old. Denouncing the failings of a consumer society that is still in its infancy, his first works carry the seal of Nature within them.
The following year, his work was the subject of a first exhibition at Gian Enzo Sperone's gallery. It is then that he becomes a travelling companion of the Arte Povera that he himself considers more as a shared sensitivity or attitude than a true structured movement.

Presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1970 or as part of the ambitious retrospective devoted to him at the Centre Pompidou in 2004, the diversity of Giuseppe Penone's work has aroused real enthusiasm among both the public and international collectors.
Thus his sculptures are the expression of an inner landscape: a reflection of the countryside where he lived in his youth and in which his artistic sensitivity developed greatly. Convinced that the landscape is full of signs inscribed in the memory of plant, organic and mineral materials, he tends in his works to reveal a human presence both in his sculptures and in his drawings.
Entitled Images de Pierres, the two lithographs that PIASA proposes during this session of December 11, 2019 were made in 1993. Reinterpreting with great subtlety the heritage of the portrait, the artist seems to be able to transform the inert into a material endowed with sensitivity.
These portraits reflect with great effectiveness the sobriety of aesthetics that the artist has developed throughout his career as well as the depth of his discourse, which has its roots in ontology.
Recently his work was presented on the sidelines of the 2019 FIAC edition at the Palais d'Iéna as well as in the exhibition "Nous les arbres" at the Fondation Cartier.
