Enzo Cucchi : Crossing the borders of the Arts

11 March 2020

As part of the sale dedicated to jewellery and artists' jewellery, PIASA auction house is proud to present a piece created in the early 1990s by the Italian painter Enzo Cucchi.

Born on 14 November 1949 in Morro d'Alba in the province of Ancona, Enzo Cucchi began painting as a self-taught artist after spending his childhood assisting his uncles in the restoration of old paintings and books. Also passionate about poetry, in 1976 the artist published a collection of poems entitled Il veleno è stator sollevato e trasportato.

During the 1970s, Enzo Cucchi travelled regularly to Rome, where he met the critic and art dealer Mario Diacono, who organized his first exhibition in Italy, but also in the United States. Following his success, he decided to devote himself exclusively to the practice of visual arts and settled permanently in Rome.

In 1979, Enzo Cucchi met the artists Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Nicola De Maria and Mimmo Paladino, with whom he collaborated in the creation of the Transvanguardia movement, theorized by the art critic Achille Bonito Oliva. This movement advocates a return to figuration and the mythical imagination.

In opposition to the conceptual art that dominated Western art in the 1970s, Enzo Cucchi expresses himself in a figurative language largely inspired by the myths, literature and landscapes of his native region.

As much a poet as a painter, he develops an imaginative universe of raw colours, imbued with great symbolic intensity.  A multidisciplinary artist, Enzo Cucchi expresses himself through the work of disparate mediums.
