Charlotte Perriand's world

11 February 2020

As part of the first session of the year 2020 dedicated to 20th century design, the auction house PIASA has the privilege of presenting three pieces by one of the most influential interior designers of the second half of the century: Charlotte Perriand

Born to a father who was a tailor and a mother who was a fashion designer, Charlotte Perriand maintained a very intimate relationship with materials throughout her life. In 1925 she obtained a diploma from the Central Union of Decorative Arts. A few months later, she exhibited wall panels at the International Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts. The following year, she presented a "salon corner" at the 1926 Salon des artistes décorateurs de Paris, including a table with a glass and steel top.

She became famous at the age of 24 with her "Bar sous le toit". This is a set, including pedestal tables, stools, a bar and a bench, created for her studio apartment on the Place Saint-Sulpice. The project was presented for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1927. The critics received the general aesthetics very positively and praised the merits of this young designer.

It was at this time that Charlotte Perriand began a ten-year collaboration (1927-1937) with Pierre Jeanneret and the latter's cousin Le Corbusier, who quickly made a place for her in the team of her agency. She became responsible for the furniture and equipment, created in 1928 with Jeanneret and Le Corbusier, for the Villa La Roche. From the 1940s onwards, her style was strongly influenced by a long stay in the Far East, particularly in Japan from 1940 to 1942. In many ways, this trip was initiatory.

From 1955 to 1960, Charlotte Perriand was artistic director with Jean Prouvé of the Galerie Steph Simon in Paris where their work was exhibited. After the abandoned project for the resort of Les Menuires, Charlotte Perriand took part between 1967 and 1986 in the design of the high altitude resort of Les Arcs in Savoie, both in its architecture and interior design.

The three pieces presented during this session reflect with great fidelity the artist's refined aesthetics.

Paire of stools

Estimate : 6000 / 9000

The pair of ash stools dates from 1953. It was published in 1953. These three legs which ensure the stability of the piece of furniture translate at the same time the sobriety of the intention and the efficiency of the result. They are offered with an estimate of between 6,000 and 9,000 euros.

Charlotte Perrand table

Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999)

Table

Estimate : 3500 / 4500

Emblematic of the furniture that Charlotte Perriand proposed for the "Arcs 1800" station, the pine table is estimated between 3 500 and 4 500 euros. Here, the function seems to have presided over the realization. The pine recalls the mountain universe for which the table was designed.
