Maghreb: focus on the Algerian artistic scene

27 April 2022

On Wednesday May 11, 2022, PIASA is holding an auction dedicated to African-related art scenes.

While the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris dedicates an exhibition to the Algerian scene with Algerie Mon Amour, PIASA is pleased to propose a focus on the artistic scene of this country, so important to French history, with the presentation of major Algerian artists such as Baya Mahieddine, Abdallah Benanteur, M'hammed Issiakhem, Mohamed Aksouh, as well as the work of more contemporary artists like Hellal Zoubir.

Abdallah Benanteur, M'hammed Issiakhem and Mohamed Aksouh are part of the "Generation 1930". After studying at the Fine Arts Schools of Algiers or Oran, they arrive in Paris in the aftermath of the Second World War. All three conduct their research around abstraction and become part of the Parisian art scene, alongside by the Americans Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Ellsworth Kelly ...

M'hamed Issiakhem
Untitled (The Young Girl), circa 1982
Estimate : 8 000 / 10 000 €

Under the influence of international modern art, each of them develops a singular plastic language marked by references to their Algerian origins and their belonging to the Arab-Berber culture. This is evidenced by the paintings of Akshouh, who settles in France in 1965, and draws his inspiration from the landscapes of his childhood and in travels to his homeland. The canvas that we present here, dated 2017, suggests in particular the sublime landscapes of the Hoggar desert.

Mohamed Aksouh
Untitled, 2007
Estimate : 3 000 / 5 000 €

Widely recognized throughout the world, the artist Fatma Mahieddine known as Baya, is one of the few women of her generation to be recognised for her painting in Algeria. Revealed at a very young age by the gallerist Aimé Maeght, she exhibits in Paris from 1947 onwards, staging dancers and others powerful female figures, whose lush dresses are adorned with multicolored birds, fish and butterflies, recurring motifs in her work. The softness of the forms and their intermingling, the exuberance of the colors, the repetition give to her work the prevalence and the onirism of the marvelous.

Untitled, 1990
Estimate : 12 000 / 15 000 €

An homage to the singer Sheikha Rimitti, considered as the spiritual mother of modern raï music, this painting by Hellal Zoubir echoes the freedoms lost during the black decade of 1990s Algeria. Without betraying his commitment to individual freedoms, Zoubir invested throughout his teaching career in favor of the artistic development in Algeria through supporting notably, a project of reform for the artistic education system.
