Arne Jacobsen, at the forefront of the Scandinavian Design

25 April 2018

On May 17th, 2018 PIASA will present 150 pieces of architects and designers at the sale Design for Architectures. Exploring the close links between Design and Architecture, several pieces by Scandinavian architect and designer Arne Jacobsen will be on sale.

Born in 1902, Arne Jacobsen is an international figure of functionalist architecture. Initially trained as a mason at Copenhagen Technical College, he graduated in architecture from the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, and joined Paul Holsoe's architecture firm where he worked for three years. In 1930, he founded his own firm where he worked his entire life.

He builds the SAS Royal Hotel of Copenhague between 1958 and 1960. It remains today one of his greatest masterpieces. As he is also in charge of interior design, this project is the occasion for him to apply his rational and functional theories on the links between Architecture and Furniture. He creates for the building several design pieces, furniture, lamps, door handles and cutlery.

An emblematic piece of the Twentieth-century industrial design will be presented at the auction : the Egg Chair, specially designed for the lobby and reception areas of the hotel. In contrast with the vertical and horizontal surfaces of the building, Arne Jacobsen imagines a chair with a molded fiberglass shell, upholstered in polyurethane foam, covered with leather and a star base in aluminium mounted on a satin-polished steel pedestal. By using simple and rigorous forms, he succeeds to merge in an harmonious way the seat, the backrest and the armrests.

Easily integrated into various types of interiors, the Egg Chair was immediately a real success thanks to its organic lines combining aesthetics and practicality as well as its alcove shape which give privacy in public spaces.
