One naturally recognizes a primary source of
inspiration in these neo-classical profiles, borrowed
from the line of Jean Cocteau - an artist venerated
by the couturier - set against abstract backgrounds
of flat color arranged in rectangles and bands. These
gouaches reveal Yves Saint Laurent's obsession
with pure lines, his desire to adorn without
encumbering.
