Exhibition: One of the copies of this edition, number
17/40, is now in the collection of the Wadsworth
Atheneum Museum of Art, where it was acquired
through a donation from the Robert Mapplethorpe
Foundation in 2014.
Note: New Piece was produced in lacquered wood in
1966 by the Documenta Foundation in Kassel in an
edition of 40 copies.
Each piece is signed, dated, and numbered by hand
by the artist on a label affixed beneath the base.
This work is part of a common practice for Tony
Smith, who created his sculptures on various scales.
The work thus exists in a monumental version in
black-painted steel, an intermediate version in
bronze with a black patina, and this miniature
version in painted wood.
