Note:
"Les proverbes flamands" is a fascinating mathematical painting where the artist included 118 Flemish sayings. Those are just as many small paintings within one. What is fascinating here is the layout of all those characters abounding in a fictitious stage, composed of various architectural elements. In this painting, also called 'Le monde à l'envers' ('The world upside down'), each character is reduced to acting out only the action described in the proverb, forever. The repetitive and frenzied music plays an essential role here.
