Ashita no Joe cel
Production cel painted in Indian ink and acrylic, with a matching gouache background depicting Joe Yabuki, the saga’s main character. A violent and rebellious orphan from the slums of Tokyo, Joe is spotted by Danpei Tange, a former boxer who decides to train him, propelling Joe into the world of professional boxing. Yet his story remains deeply tragic despite his many victories; as the fights go on, he develops boxer’s syndrome, which makes him increasingly unable to fight, but Joe continues to battle on until he becomes ‘pure white ashes’, as he puts it to his friend Yoko Shiraki. Half-blind and dying during his final fight against José Mendoza, Joe dozes off on his stool in the corner of the ring and dies with a smile on his lips and his mind at peace.
