Yayoi Kusama: Mirror box

The Editions sale on 11 December 2019 presents a work by Yayoi Kusama entitled Mirror Box, which is characteristic of her entire career, during which she has always made recurring use of mirrors. This is a great tribute to this artist who is celebrating her 90th birthday this year.

In Yayoi Kusama's work, the idea of infinity is a guiding principle. To do this, she uses mirrors that multiply space and give viewers an intense and unique multisensory experience, which can be found in her installations "Infinity Mirror Room", whose original presentation in 1965 at the Castellane Gallery in New York will be one of the artist's first happenings on American soil. It was presented again this year to the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Spectators of the Infinity Mirror Rooms can physically enter and are therefore completely immersed in the work.

Yayoi Kusama then created creations that were accessible from the outside. In this way, he reproduced these sensations on the scale of the Mirror box. Indeed, spectators are encouraged to look inside the cube through its windows in order to observe the different circular shapes that are reflected to infinity. Thus, the observer finds himself projected into a space that seems indefinite in which the circles float. The appearance of the cube will change according to environmental conditions, so that the colours will differ according to the evolution of the luminosity and according to the room where it is located. The spectator is thus immersed in the experience and becomes an actor in a unique and original experience.
