On the occasion of the "American / Brazilian / Japanese Design" sale on Thursday, July 2, 2020, PIASA is offering four pieces of furniture by American designer Vladimir Kagan.
Born in 1927 in Worms, Germany, Vladimir Kagan is the son of a Russian cabinetmaker. Faced with the rise of the Nazi party, he and his family were forced to emigrate to the United States in 1938.
He became interested in painting and sculpture before turning to architecture and design. His itinerary led him to study at the School of Industrial Art from 1946, then at Columbia University.
After graduating, he joined his father, with whom he made his first furniture. Three years later, Vladimir Kagan opened his first personal boutique in New York. His network of customers expands considerably following the opening, in 1950, of another store on 57th Avenue. Halfway between sculpture and design, his pieces are characterised by the use of wrought iron, cast iron, aluminium and above all organically worked wood.
