The Glass Artistry of Eric Schmitt

29 April 2025

In 1990, Eric Schmitt began working with glass following a proposal by Clotilde Bacri who was at the time managing DAUM and proposed him to draw a collection. There are actually in this sale two pieces of this collection “Possi” in bronze and glass paste. On a trip to Bohemia to finalize the lighting of the Palace of Rania and Abdullah of Jordan, he took the opportunity to blow some vases to bring back as Christmas gifts. This is how the first “Bohême” vases were born, which are each time unique pieces: the random colors, the blow as the hand of man fortunately does not allow to realize the same object.

Enthusiastic by the many possibilities he imagines, he goes there regularly for ritual sessions. A complicity that has been established for more than twenty years between Eric Schmitt and this workshop in the heart of Europe, in Czech Republic, where the glass tradition has never died out for more than two centuries.

Beyond the skill and mastery of the gesture, one of the great virtues of this workshop lies in the power and capacity of the craftsmen to blow large-scale pieces in glass weights rarely reached for mouth blow. This is how Eric Schmitt was able to imagine large tables that rest on glass bases or side tables whose trays are despite appearances, also of blown glass, turned and flattened. This sale brings together for the first time, pieces from all collections in glass, glass and wood, glass and bronze or glass and aluminium. There are many unique creations, prototypes, or artist’s proofs.
