Born in Occhiobello (Roma) on June 12, 1932 and died in Rome on August 12, 2016, Silvano Clemente Rovati began working in Rome in the early 60s, experimenting with various painting techniques. Influenced by the artistic currents that found fertile ground and intellectual ferment in Rome in the 60s, he embarked on a production of tapestries, which he created with reference to certain masters of the national scene - Cagli, Burri and Afro- and international such as Matisse, to whom he paid direct homage in his work.
He builds his own high-quality looms (made from oak wood), with which he carries out his production. He develops tapestries applied to his designs, characterized by combinations of shapes and colors apparently inspired by floral motifs that he calls "cells".
The amorphous patches of color are suspended on flat patches of color, sometimes conceptualized with geometric shapes that incorporate or juxtapose each other. In some of his compositions, there's what he calls a "monogram", a kind of letter A that can become either the stylization of a cell/flower vase, or an element that creates and balances the composition itself.

In other cases, architectural geometries carve out and differentiate spaces, where colored cells remain suspended from overlapping geometric shapes. Rovati also inserts soft, undulating elements into her compositions, referring to a liquid element.
Thus, the cellular element rubs shoulders with rigid color fields, curves and sinuous lines, but always remains as if suspended in air. In the subject of the seasons, the same composition changes color: cold blues for winter and more acidic yellows and greens for autumn.
The "cells" are characteristic of Rovati's work: they are whimsical, embodying both flowers and clouds that float and cling in compositions on the regular, colored face of a square or rectangle. Even if the "cell" is framed and enclosed in a field, it always remains free to move.
A regular space, a band of color or lines divide and limit, but inside and outside, there's always something that can happen. The space is empty, but the cell is alive. This is Rovati, rational in the geometric element as well as in the precision of the technique adopted to produce his works, but also an evolving cell in its creative interpretation.
