Sergio Rodrigues: Brazilian Identity

3 December 2020

The Brazilian Design auction that PIASA organizes on Thursday, December 10th, 2020 will be an opportunity for the auction house to present several pieces signed by the designer Sergio Rodrigues.

Alongside those of Joaquim Tenreiro and José Zanine Caldas, the career of Sergio Rodrigues - over more than half a century - has contributed greatly to Brazil's emergence on the world design scene. Proclaimed by the incredible diversité́ of the pieces he has created, his technical virtuosity must be associated with his fierce will to shape an aesthetic, or better yet, to exalt a truly Brazilian spirit.

Born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Rodrigues first devoted himself to interior design. He designed the University of Brasilia, the Palace of the Arcs and the National Theater in the Brazilian capital.

Quite quickly, Sergio Rodrigues' work tended to break away from Bauhaus art and the modernist movement that had taken over Brazil in the 1920s, and he designed his own style, preferring natural materials to steel.

In 1955 he inaugurated his own interior design studio in panemla and the name "Oca", "hut in indigenous Brazilian. This new alternative space allows him to design innovative pieces of interior furniture, to conceive scenographies and to create interior decorations. Drawing inspiration from the indigenous culture, Sergio Rodrigues creates his own unique and precursory style. Favoring natural materials such as imbuia wood over steel, he designs furniture with soft and organic lines to beautiful and comfortable furniture.

The most successful pieces bear witness to this: Sergio Rodrigues paid great attention to the comfort of the users, not hesitating to add to his models generous leather cushions that blended harmoniously into their shapes.
