Hans J. Wegner, founding father of Scandinavian design

27 September 2018

On the occasion of the Scandinavian Design sale which will take place on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, PIASA honours the signatures of the greatest Nordic designers. This Scandinavian design will be represented by Hans J. Wegner, who embodies all the excellence and values of Danish design.

The son of a craftsman, Hans J. Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark. At the age of 14, he trained as a cabinetmaker at Stahlbergl and then completed his apprenticeship as a craftsman with a design course at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. In 1940, he joined Arne Jacobsen's firm before founding his own design firm in 1943. Nevertheless, throughout his career, he continued to work with other designers and architects such as Borge Mogensen and Palle Suenson. First winner of the Lunning Prize in 1951, he was designated an honorary member of the Royal College of Art and received the 8th International Design Award in 1997.

Among the iconic pieces of the Danish designer presented during this sale on October 10, a set of six chairs commonly known as the "China" Model. Created in 1944, this piece is inspired by classic 17th and 18th century Chinese chairs with a timeless and light design. This creation, both aesthetic and ergonomic, illustrates the meticulousness that Hans J. Wegner was careful to bring to each of his creations. The Flag Halyard chair, another emblematic piece by the Danish designer, is also present. With this design, Wegner pays tribute to early modernists such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer, and proves that he also masters the use of chrome steel tubes. The flat surfaces of the chair are made with a long and unique halyard, covered with a sheepskin to soften the industrial coldness of the steel.
