27 September 2018

On October 10, 2018 PIASA will present at the Scandinavian Design sale around 250 pieces by different renowned architects and designers. This sale explores the close links between Scandinavian design and architecture, several pieces by the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen will be on sale.

Arne Jacobsen, international figure of the so-called "functionalist" architecture, was born in 1902 in Copenhagen. He first learned masonry at the Copenhagen Technical College, he graduated in 1927 from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. During his training trip through Germany he was influenced by artists such as Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. He then joined Paul Holsoe's architectural company, then launched his own firm in 1930, where he worked all his life.

One of the most emblematic piece of the 20th century industrial design designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955 is the chair model called the 7 or 3107 series. The Danish designer first designed the “Ant chair” model, which he then developed to design this “7 series”, which is more stable and comfortable. Indeed, the ergonomic shape of the chair, with its seat curved inwards, has been designed to be perfectly adapted to the human body. Lightweight and practical, the 3107 chair model can be used in all environments, making it the chair with the widest range of uses in the Fritz Hansen collection.

Arne Jacobsen was able to use fully the possibilities offered by the rolling techniques developed by Søren C Hansen, grandson of the founder Fritz Hansen, in the 1920s and 1930s. He thus succeeded in combining three different curves in a single moulded part to create the now iconic shape of the chair.

Another timeless and iconic model of the Danish designer, the Grand Prix chair was created for the manufacturer Fritz Hansen in 1957. Presented the same year at the Copenhagen Design Museum as part of the Danish Crafts Spring and then at the Milan Triennial, it received the highest distinction: the Grand Prize. It will in fact be renamed by its current name "Grand Prix".
