Samir Sayegh and Modern Calligraphy

10 September 2020

As part of the "From Beirut Art + Design scene" sale, PIASA presents on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 6 pm several emblematic artists of the Lebanese contemporary creation, among which Samir Sayegh.

Considered as one of the most avant-garde Arab master calligraphers,  Samir Sayegh was born in Lebanon in 1945. Cross-disciplinary artist, he is a master calligrapher, an art critic, a historian, a poet, a writer and a researcher in Beirut, all at the same time.

Through his work, Sayegh seeks to combine his research on traditional calligraphy with his interest in contemporary design. Liberating letters and words from language and meaning, the Lebanese artist focuses instead on the aesthetic properties of writing.

Using only the formal elements of line and space, he experiments with "the geometric, structural and abstract potentialities of traditional calligraphy", transforming Arabic letters into dynamic geometric composition, often covering the entire surface of his canvases.
