The PIASA auction house and Jean-Baptiste de Proyart, Libraire-Expert, had the honour to present the modern part of François Mitterrand's library at auction on 29 and 30 October. It was a success, with a packed auction room and many bidders competing for the most emblematic editions. All of the 684 lots presented were sold with an overall result of €1,500,000 (including buyers premium).
This sale presented a thousand works from the 20th century literature, most often bound original editions, which had belonged to François Mitterrand's youngest son, Gilbert, since the death of the former head of state. This collection was enhanced by a few manuscripts and autographs, some of which were bound by his wife Danielle Mitterrand or by the best practitioners of the second half of the 20th century.
The highest bid of this sale goes to an edition of Jules Romains' "Les Hommes de bonne volontél", estimated at €8,000 to €12,000 and which finally rose at €41,600 after an auction battle in the auction room and on the phone.
