On Tuesday 21 December, PIASA invited collectors to its last sale of the year devoted to 20th and 21st century Editions. Led by Cécilia de Broglie, the auction achieved a total of €374,300.
Yves Klein's iconic sculpture, L'esclave mourant after Michelangelo, was the top selling item at €88,400 (lot 99). Two exceptional triptychs by Francis Bacon fetched €35,500 (lot 132) and €32,800 (lot 133) respectively.
Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale (1968) sold for €8,000 (lot 183), above its estimate. Sam Francis's very fine lithographs achieved very good results, notably Untitled (SFE-080) (1991), which sold for €7,150 (lot 8), and the aquatint entitled Trietto III (1991), which sold for €8,850 (lot 13). Jean Dubuffet's magnificent silkscreen relief Deux personnages (1971) was acquired for €4,200 (lot 46).
In Modern Art, Kees Van Dongen's Le coquelicot (1960) was sold above its estimate for €6,500 (lot 41). In Very Contemporary Art, Daniel Arsham's Erroded Suitcase (2019), in collaboration with Rimowa, sold for €3,500 (lot 238) and Pavlos' Seven Ties (1970) sculptures sold for €4,700 (lot 131). Also notable were the results for Jules Olistki's Graphic suite of five silkscreens (1970), which sold for €3,550, and Barry Flanagan's Jeu d'échecs (1973), which smashed its estimate to €3,100 (lot 149).
This sale featured and achieved excellent results for more discreet but highly regarded works by Jean Dubuffet (lot 44), Geneviève Asse (lot 97), Maria Helena Vieira da Silva (lot 98), Christo and Jeanne Claude (lot 108), Simon Hantaï (lot 118), Daniel Buren (lot 120), Philippe Hiquily (lot 125), Joseph Beuys (lot 155), Joseph Albers (lot 188), Pierre Klossowski (lot 167), Sam Francis, Sol Lewitt (lot 189), Judit Reigl (lots 201 and 202), François-Xavier Lalanne (lots 205-213) and André (lot 240).
