Pol Bury: a multidisciplinary artist

28 November 2019

The sale on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 organized by PIASA will be dedicated to artists' jewellery. This selection allows us to explore the history of 20th century art through the paths of a production that often extends and adapts the aesthetics of artists such as Alessandro Mendini (1931-2019), Claude Lalanne (1925-2019), Meret Oppenheim (1913-2085) or Pol Bury (1922-2005).

He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mons when he had only just reached the age of 16. The experience will be short as he will not stay there for more than a year before leaving by bicycle to cross neighbouring France. When he returned to Belgium in 1939, he began painting and met the poets Achille Chavée and André Lorent, both strongly influenced by Surrealism.

At the 1945 International Exhibition of Surrealism in Brussels, Pol Bury exhibited his paintings, on the surface of which the influence of Yves Tanguy, and especially that of René Magritte, was visible. Seduced by the non-conformist of the CoBrA group of artists, he abandoned painting for sculpture in 1953 following a Calder exhibition at the Maeght Gallery.

Pol BURY (1922-2005)
Bracelet "Sphères mobiles des deux côtés d'un cylindre"

Estimate : 28000 / 35000 €

Around 1954, Bury equipped his Moving Plans with an electric motor so that they were no longer the toy of public arbitrariness. In 1955, he participated in the exhibition "Le Mouvement" organized at the Denise René Gallery, which brought together works by Agam, Calder, Duchamp, Jacobsen, Soto, Tinguely and Vasarely and marked the beginning of kinetic art.

From the late 1960s, he also devoted himself to writing, making fountains and jewellery made from cardboard models that the artist had published.

As an extension of his work, the jewellery he began to make was often an exact replica of his sculptures in reduced dimensions, in gold or silver.

The piece offered for sale by PIASA was one of the first four designed by the artist in 1968 at the invitation of his Milanese publisher. Listed in the artist's archives, only 25 copies were produced.  The golden sparkling of the small spheres revolves around this pink gold bracelet
