Casimir Zagourski Photographs, International Exhibition, Paris 1937

In the spring of 1937 in Paris is held the International Exhibition in order to promote peace in Europe and in the world. Fifty nations are represented through their pavilions with spectacular architecture where they display their industrial, cultural and colonial power. International political tensions and the economic crisis since 1929 highlight a particular face to face.

In the gardens of the Trocadero the German pavilions of the Third Reich face the USSR pavillon whose powerful symbols dominate the whole exhibition and confront each other in a symbolically violent way. The Nazi eagle symbolizes imperialism and domination, the Soviet labor couple holds vigorously the sickle and the hammer. At the same time, at the pavillon of the Spanish Republic, is unveiled for the first time the artwork “Guernica” by Picasso.

Belgium is among the nations represented. Proud of its colonies in Africa, it sets up a Belgian Congo Pavilion where is presented by Casimir Zagourski around sixty of his photographs, displayed in large format on a luxurious Agfa lux Brovira velvet paper with unequaled grain and depth. Transported from Africa to Europe by the Belgian airline Sabena, these photographs are exposed under glass and have a wide public success.
