As part of the "Art + Design of a European Private Collection" sale on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, PIASA presents a selection of artists and designers from the second half of the 20th century, including Pierre Guariche.
After graduating in 1949 from the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, Pierre Guariche completed an internship with decorator Marcel Gascoin. Combining modernism and democratization, the latter familiarizes him with the production of furniture in series. On the strength of this valuable experience, Pierre Guariche founded his own agency and participated, from 1953 to 1957, in the Atelier de recherches plastiques (A.R.P.), with French designers Michel Mortier and Joseph-André Motte, who remained an important source of inspiration throughout his career.
As an architect, Pierre Guariche designed a large number of facilities and buildings in the Paris region, such as the General Council and the Prefecture of Essonne, the Créteil Regional Court and Le Méridien porte Maillot. Like Charlotte Perriand, he designed studios and apartments in the Alps (La Plagne).
Among the pieces included in the selection of September 23, 2020, the Model G23 of the double pendulum lamp was made in 1951. Its structure is composed of lacquered metal and brass giving the work a great lightness. Published by Disderot, it is proposed with an estimate between 12 000 and 18 000 euros. It illustrates very effectively, the minimal approach that Pierre Guariche had of materials and forms in space.

Recognition was not long in coming, since in 1965, the quality of his work enabled him to receive the René-Gabriel Prize. Although he passed away in 1995, his creations are still being republished by Maisons du Monde.
