On Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at 6:00 p.m., PIASA will dedicate its "Design Made In America" sale to the great names of 20th century American design: Isamu Noguchi, Judy Kensley McKie, Paul Evans, George Nakashima, Sergio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin will be represented. Among them, Oscar Niemeyer, considered one of Brazil's greatest architects, and the father of modernism, holds a major place in the history of modern architecture.

Niemayer and the urban planner Lucio Costa, are the builders of Brasilia, inaugurated in 1960, who made them world famous. Fleeing the dictatorship in the 1960s in Brazil, Niemeyer took refuge in Paris where he built, among other things, the headquarters of the Communist Party and began to design furniture. His design creations are less known to the general public but just as remarkable.

His daughter Anna Maria, also an architect, worked with her father, focusing mainly on interior spaces, decoration and furniture design. Its two most famous achievements are the "Alta" and the "Rio". Today PIASA presents the "Marquesa" model, a very beautiful wooden and cane bench dated 1974, estimated between 18 000€ and 25 000€; this one takes up the soft shapes, curves and contrasts that Niemeyer loved working with concrete.

Despite a very classical education, his admiration is for the work of Le Corbusier, Mies Van de Rohe, or the American architect Franck Lloyd Wright. Although inspired by this modern movement, Oscar Niemeyer stands out from it by favouring curved and sensual lines, which he prefers to the right angles "which divide" like the armchair in painted plywood, metal and leather dating from 1978.
