Peter Fischli & David Weiss, from Ordinary to Sublime

17 September 2021

On September 23rd, PIASA is holding a Contemporary Art auction featuring works from a French private collection. This 154-lot sale reflects the wide-ranging interests of the collector A.M. in contemporary art, of which he has become a connoisseur.

Peter Fischli (born 1952) & David Weiss (1946-2012) began their collaboration in 1979. "Son et Lumière" (Le rayon vert, 1990) is a light installation created from ordinary materials: a plastic cup, a turntable and a torch. A spectacular and captivating projection of green and red light that reveals the artists' interest in the relationship between the ordinary and the sublime.

"Looking at the red and green spirals projected on the wall by a torch, the light is immediately understandable. But it is the sound that surprises: the rhythmic scratching of the slightly tilted plastic cup, which rotates as it swings back and forth, back and forth, producing the peculiar and indescribable sound of a plastic cup moving across a surface."
