As part of the Design auction organised in Brussels by PIASA on Wednesday January 20th, several furniture pieces by Czech designer Pavel Novák will be presented to collectors.
Sometimes, due to circumstances, either tragic or fortuitous, a corpus of work never makes it past the studio door of the person who patiently created it. Pavel Novák is one such artist, a "bedroom genius" whose life and work would have deserved a completely different fate. We have only been able to collect little information about the author of these functional sculptures, which were probably created from the mid-1970s until the artist's death in 2002.

Born in Bohemia in the 1930s, Novák joined members of his diaspora in the Gers after the Soviet army's repression of the Prague Spring movement in 1968. Working as a simple labourer in a sawmill, he devoted a large part of his free time to making these seats, furniture and objects, mainly in solid oak and worked with a gouge, that never had any other vocation than to furnish his farm.
