Paavo Tynell, light of Finnish design

3 October 2019

As part of its sale "Scandinavian Selected Design", PIASA present twelve pieces made by one of the most emblematic figures of Finnish design.

It's in a Finnish metal crafts company that Paavo Tynell begins his career. He graduated in 1913 before continuing his studies at Taideteollisuus Keskuskoulu (today the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki) where he will teach later.

Alongside the industrialist Gösta Serlachius (1876-1942), the sculptor Emil Wickström (1864-1942) and the artist Eric Ehrström (1881-1934), he founded his own company Oy Taito Ab, which he managed for more than 35 years from 1918 to 1953.

His company began creating metal objects, ranging from industrial lighting to more demanding works of art such as statues, railings and silverware. Only in early 1930s Oy Taito Ab specializes in lighting.

Estimation : 5000 / 7000 €

After the purchase of Oy Taito Ab by Idman Oy, one of its partners, Paavo Tynell began designing a large number of pieces as an independent designer for an American lighting company.

It was at this time that he realized the lighting of the office of the Secretary General of the United Nations in New York and others ambitious project like in the Parliament in Helsinki.

Because he thought his work at the confluence of several disciplines, the designer collaborated with architects like Alvar Aalto.

Estimate : 50000 / 70000 €

Among the pieces offered for sale, the pair of suspensions, estimated between 50,000 and 70,000 euros was made in the early 1950s for a hotel in Savonlinna, Finland. Ending with stylized leaves, the golden brass rods gracefully imitate the unfolding of a plant.

We find this graceful reference to vegetation in the "Model 9029/5" in brass and opaline glass. Reissued in 2018 by the Danish design company Gubi, Paavo Tynell's pieces are attracting increasing interest from collectors, as evidenced by the high auctions reached during the sale of February 20, 2019 with the suspension Snowflake (91 000 euros) or the Model 9209 which tripled its high estimate to exceed 20 000 euros.
