Sergio Rodrigues has played a major role in creating a true Brazilian design movement. Indeed, he and his peers brought a modernist revolution inspired in part by Bauhaus and rationalism. According to him, "Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer were among the first to apply the principles of modernism to architecture in the 1930s.

This influence of the great Brazilian architects is reflected in his work and the pieces he designs. Rodrigues has created a true identity specific to Brazilian design: while the principles of industrialization and the exhaustion of lines borrowed from European modernists remain, the Brazilian designer favours wood indigenous to Brazil rather than metal, organic shapes, and comfort, such as the "Banco Mucki" bench in macaranduba wood. He draws his inspiration from indigenous culture to create a pioneering and unique style and is now considered the father of modern Brazilian design.
