On Thursday July 8th at 3pm, PIASA is holding a (Very) Contemporary Art auction. On this occasion, the minimalist work of the American artist Ned Vena will be presented to collectors.
Ned Vena is a New York-based artist whose artistic practice is characterised by a fusion of digital technologies and materials from graffiti and vandalism. Through a wide variety of mediums, such as painting, sculpture, installations and films, Ned Vena proposes a renewed vision of artistic creation. His visual language is inspired by Op Art but also by minimalism: like Frank Stella's "Black Painting", he creates radical compositions using materials from industrial production; vinyl, rubber, safety glass. In most of his compositions, Vena creates a structure by repeating a pattern of right-angled lines that divide the canvas into four quarters. Following a serial principle, the number of quarters has been increased to eight or twelve on some canvases, almost creating a diptych or triptych on the same canvas and creating new variations of the motif.

These structures are created using software that produces grids which he then transfers to canvas using stencils. Through this approach to painting, Ned Vena seeks to show that there is a fine line between mass-produced everyday objects and unique and precious art objects. Ned Vena's work is represented by the Société Gallery, Berlin and Project Native Informant, London.
His work has been exhibited in museums such as the Contemporary art museum in Saint Louis, USA (2016), FRAC Auvergne (2013).
