The first part of the Selected Design auction on December 11th presents a selection of works from a private Belgian collection, composed of many pieces by Walloon and Flemish designers, including Maarten Van Severen.
Born in 1956 in Antwerp, Belgium, Maarten Van Severen began studying architecture at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts. In 1986, he began designing his first pieces of furniture. The following year, in 1987, he founded a design studio with semi-industrial production.
The unity of design and production has long been the essential basis of his work, which is marked by intensive work on certain types of basic furniture such as chairs, tables, deckchairs, shelves and wardrobes. The solutions he develops are always based on conceptual research in terms of forms, materials and structure
