On the occasion of its next Italian Design auction on November 5, PIASA is offering collectors a selection of pieces by emblematic designers of the second half of the 20th century, including Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
Born in Milan, in 1913, Luigi Caccia Dominioni comes from an ancient noble family from Novara. Four years after his death, he remains, together with the designer and architect Gio Ponti, one of the emblematic figures of Italian modernity.
After having studied at the Leo XIII Institute in Milan, then run by the Jesuits, Luigi Caccia Dominioni enrolled in 1931 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Royal Institute of Higher Technical Studies. On the benches of this institution, from which several great names of 20th century Italian design would emerge, the young man met Cesare Cattaneo and brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.
After graduating in 1936, he opened his first studio with them. Together they produced a large number of pieces, including several models of radio sets for La Phonola, an Italian electronic equipment company. They were presented in 1940 at the Seventh Milan Triennial, where the three architects were noticed by critics and publishers both Italian and international.

From the very first years, Luigi Caccia Dominioni's production is characterized by an important diversity of objects and furniture. One example is the Miracoli cutlery. At the end of his military service, which he did from 1939 to 1943, he opened his own studio. Several times awarded the Compasso d'oro prize, the designer met with success with models such as the "Cdo" chair and, in 1984, for the "Super" door.
His work (furniture, lighting and accessories) gives a certain freedom to the materials while remaining in tune with technological innovations, which were numerous in the 1970s and 1980s.

The artisanal and industrial technical processes are combined with great harmony. Whether in the heart of Milan, in Como or Verona, the buildings he designed bear witness to the inventiveness of this architect who, throughout his life, moved between function and beauty. Generally made up of very assertive straight lines, they offer an aesthetics of sobriety.
As for the furniture and design pieces, they are nowadays preserved in the most prestigious collections in New York, as well as in Vienna and Madrid.
