On Thursday July 8, PIASA is organising a superb (Very) Contemporary Art auction. With 109 lots, it features the unique work of artist Katherine Bernhardt.
Katherine Bernhardt is a contemporary American artist. Known for her style characterised by rapid brushstrokes, fluid gestures and shimmering colours, her preferred medium is painting. In the early 2000s, she attracted the attention of the art world with her paintings of female models, works through which she questions the fashion industry and the notion of beauty. The work shown here was part of the solo exhibition Katherine Bernhardt - Kiss me Kate, at Gallery LOYAL, Stockholm in 2007, which brought together a series of portraits of Kate Moss inspired by multiple advertisements collected by the artist from fashion magazines. Subsequently, Katherine Bernhardt turned to the representation of everyday objects taken out of their context, which she throws pell-mell onto the canvas, giving her creations an eccentric and disordered dimension. Inspired by oriental carpet prints, African textiles and tropical imagery, Katherine Bernhardt's work is a mixture of influences from around the world, which she draws from her extensive travels.

Katherine Bernhardt's work has been exhibited worldwide in solo shows at renowned galleries such as Loyal Gallery, Stockholm, Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve, Paris, Carl Freedman Gallery, London, Venus over Manhattan, New York and Los Angeles, CANADA, Team, and Karma, New York and Xavier Hufkens, Brussels. Her work has been shown in museum exhibitions: Watermelon World, Mario Testino Museum (MATE), Lima, Peru (2018), Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, USA (2017); Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, USA (2017) and in important public and private collections (selection): Brant Foundation, Greenwich, USA; Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, USA; Hall Art Foundation, Reading, USA; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, USA; Portland Museum of Art, USA; Rubell Collection, Miami, USA.
