Far from the career as a notary clerk that he had begun in Saint-Quentin , the plastic trajectory that Henri Matisse took after a stay of several weeks in hospital in 1890, contributed to the birth of Modern Art.

Two years later, he went to Paris and met Albert Marquet at the École des Arts Déco. After training in the workshop of Gustave Moreau, the young thirty-year-old attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière then under the direction of Antoine Bourdelle. After his discovery of the work of Paul Signac, he travelled to Corsica (1901), to Saint Tropez to stay with his master and friend Paul Signac (1904) before reaching the small Catalan fishing port of Collioure.

It is in this virgilian universe, a short distance from the Spanish border, that the painter will bring his painting into a bath of pure colours for one summer.

The paintings and watercolours that he and André Derain would bring back to Paris would make a great noise.  At the Salon d'Automne, they cause a scandal. In an article published in Gil Blas on October 17, 1905, the critic Louis Vauxcelle denounced the chromatic radicalism of "Donatello chez les fauves", unknowingly giving a name to the ongoing pictorial revolution.

In 1909, the Russian collector Sergueï Chtchoukine commissioned two paintings from the artist: La Danse and La Musique. Presented at the Autumn Salon in 1910, they were installed in Moscow in 1911.

Until 1913, Matisse leaves his studio in Paris and then in Issy for Andalusia, Morocco and Algeria.  These travels will deeply influence the artist. After the First World War, he settled in Nice. His work then focused on still lifes, nudes and odalisques that are reminiscent of orientalist nudes with shimmering colours and sober drawing.

Henri Matisse took advantage of a trip to Tahiti to visit the United States and New York where his son Pierre opened a gallery. In New York, the Museum of Modern Art organized a retrospective in 1931 after a solo exhibition in 1930. During this American stay, Albert Barnes, a collector, commissions a monumental work from her for his foundation in Philadelphia.

Following colon cancer, the artist is bedridden. Having a need for virtue, he starts using the technique of cut-out gouaches. In 1945, a major Matisse retrospective was organised at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
