As part of its first session of the year dedicated to design, PIASA presents on Thursday 20 February 2020 a selection of lots created by the most significant designers of the 20th century.
Born in the town of Tønder in Denmark, Hans Wegner began exploring the materials that characterised his career in his father Peter M. Wegner's shoemaking workshop. While the young man became familiar with the use of tools, it is towards woodcarving that he seems to be heading. From the age of 14 he trained as a cabinetmaker at Stahlbergl and completed this training by enrolling at the Danish Technological Institute. He then completed this apprenticeship with a design course at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and later joined Arne Jacobsen's firm as an assistant architect.
In 1943, he founded his own design studio but continued to work with other designers and architects such as Borge Mogensen and Palle Suenson throughout his career. First winner of the Lunning Prize in 1951, he was made an honorary member of the Royal College of Art and received the 8th International Design Award in 1997. With the design of more than 500 models of chairs and armchairs, he is considered one of the most prolific creators of Scandinavian design but above all one of its founding fathers.

Estimation : 10000 / 15000 €
Emblematic of the relationship that design has with different types of wood, the string made around 1950 is offered for sale with an estimate of between 10,000 and 15,000 euros. The great mastery of the volumes is combined with a very pictorial approach to the material. The oak, teak and the spaces covered with cane offer a chromatic sensation of the most successful. It was published by RY Mobler.
The pair of armchairs model CH-27 also comes from the meeting of oak and wickerwork. It was designed at a time when international prizes were being awarded to his work and is estimated at between 8,000 and 12,000 euros. In this arrangement of shapes, curves and lines, comfort remains a priority for this designer, who is halfway between the beautiful and the useful.
