On the occasion of the Design auction that will take place in Brussels on Wednesday, January 20th, 2021, PIASA is honoring the signatures of the greatest designers. Scandinavian design will notably be represented by Hans J. Wegner, who embodies all the excellence and values of Danish creation.
Son of a craftsman, Hans J. Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Denmark. At the age of 14, he trained as a cabinetmaker at Stahlbergl and then completed his apprenticeship as a craftsman with a training in design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. In 1940, he joined the firm of Arne Jacobsen before founding his own design firm in 1943. Nevertheless, throughout his career he continued to work with other designers and architects such as Borge Mogensen and Palle Suenson. First winner of the Lunning Prize in 1951, he was made an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Art and received the 8th International Design Award in 1997.

Drawing his inspiration from the work of Kaare Klint, Hans J. Wegner designed more than 500 models during his career in collaboration with various furniture manufacturers such as Johannes Hansen, Carl Hansen and A.P. Stolen. The founding father of Scandinavian design, many of his pieces are now considered design icons. In the image of Scandinavian design, he produces pieces that are at once aesthetically pleasing, elegant, minimalist, and sometimes organic.

In his quest for the ideal chair, the quantity, but above all the quality of the seating models he has designed throughout his career are testimony to Hans J. Wegner's constant perfectionism. Several iconic pieces will be presented during this Design auction, such as the model chair no. JH540, commonly known as the "Valet chair" and imagined in 1953. Made of oak wood, this chair combines several functions to answer the question: "What is the most practical way to fold one's clothes at bedtime ?". The complexity of this creation, both aesthetic and ergonomic, illustrates all the meticulousness that Hans J. Wegner took care to bring to each of his creations.
