Hans Hartung: HH3152

5 December 2022

PIASA is organizing a sale of modern and contemporary art on Wednesday, December 7th.

Hartung is not just a museum artist. His paintings link the cosmos to the intimate, and the perception of the universe to its movements. They are a condensation; they transform their relationship to the world by cutting into the sharpness of the form. The prolific artwork cannot be reduced to the mere gesture of it: it is much more premeditated and mastered than it seems. Its apparent coldness is itself a tactic of the retention in the abandonment, of cohesion in the imbalance. Hartung did not need to perfect his pictorial technique or his subject. His paintings are made to hold the attention and to open a door towards the beyond. Their complex content, difficult to reduce to virtuosity, is the affirmation of the individual in the the world. A great painting is not a brilliant painting, but a painting whose reason for being is not understood.
